More info to come later, but today was bittersweet.
Our brave volunteers had a difficult day that is best summed up by this comment from Cheryl:
Terribly disappointed about the results today. I've never left 6 behind (and still had money left) but I've never seen a crowd like this or prices like this. There were times we couldn't even see over the heads of the people around the pens to see which dogs we were buying - we just bid. Couldn't see each other at times, it was tight, crowded quarters. Probably 50+ people around the pens that were being auctioned.
We got 11 of the 17 adults and got none of the females with puppies.
Dreary, muddy, dirty conditions. Very stressful, real time. Millers running up the bids determined to get the the young females with puppies. We are all trying to focus on being grateful for the dogs we got out – while trying not to think too much about those we didn’t get.
We had eight volunteers at the auction. Can’t thank them enough for stepping into the fire. Thanks to all of you who sent money. Thanks to all of the groups who volunteered to take these dogs. As I said, there will be additional info tomorrow or Monday.

The following message is from Bob Bornstein of Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue in OK, and the Puppy Mill Rescue Team. After a hiatus of almost two years, the auction action is starting up again. PMRT acquired 10 dogs from some out-of-business millers a few weeks ago, and now are facing the prospect of having to rescue up to 16 dogs from an upcoming liquidation auction.
A liquidation auction in one where the puppy mill is actually going out of business (yeah!) and has to sell off its 'inventory' of breeding animals. The bad news is, if the PMRT doesn't have enough cash on hand to purchase all the available goldens, those dogs we miss may just wind up back in the puppy mill cycle of despair if purchased by another puppy mill operator.
PMRT volunteers go to these auctions and have to witness the nightmare conditions these dogs have to live in first-hand, and keep their heads long enough to be able to function during the auction to make sure they can rescue as many as possible without depleting their funds before the last dog is sold. Aside from the purchase price, funds are also needed for transportation, boarding and primary vet care (most of these dogs come out in awful condition).
As you may know, Sooner GRR is a very small organization, and dealing with the rescue conditions in their own area can be very overwhelming on many levels, emotionally, physically and financially. Taking on the cause of these poor souls, the dogs most in need of rescue, seems like too much to ask them, but they do it cheerfully anyway.
Please forward this message to as many of your friends, relatives and golden-lovers as possible! If everyone who saw this message and cared just a little sent $1 or $5, Sooner would have all the resources it needs to do this wonderful work. Thank you for all you do for the rescue dogs in general, and for those that need it most!
Hi Everyone.
Thanks to so many of you who purchased the Golden Retriever Puppy Mill Rescue Team Calendar the past two years, we have not had to ask for donations to rescue Goldens from puppy mill auctions since 2008. It has also helped that the number of Goldens in Midwest auctions has been small – we were able to get 13 Goldens out of the mills in the past year with funds already in our account. That has now changed.
On this coming Saturday, May 1st, 16 puppy mill Goldens will be at auction in Lebanon, MO. We plan to be there to get them out of puppy mill hell. Even though we have a base of funds from the Calendar sales, we don’t know what we will be facing on Saturday.
So, if you can help, please send a donation to help us rescue these Goldens. You have a couple of options to donate. You can go to www.grpmrt.org and click on the donate button to send us a donation using PayPal or your credit card. Or you can mail a check made out to GRPMRT to GRPMRT, P.O. Box 57139, Oklahoma City, OK 73157-7139. If you are planning to mail a check, please send me an email (bob.bornstein@cox.net) to let me know that we have funds coming in.
Thanks again to all of you who have helped us get Goldens out of the mills!
